The spike doesn't land the same way twice, and this movie knows it. It compresses season one into ninety minutes without losing the moment where Karasuno stops being a joke to themselves, where Kageyama's hands stop shaking, where a middle blocker finally believes he belongs on a court. The new material exists in the margins, but the real gift is watching the series' best character moments crystallize under a sharper animation budget, with sound design that makes you feel the contact of every touch and set like you're playing alongside them.

Retelling the first season of the Haikyu!! TV anime, the film adds some story material the series never showed. Shoyo Hinata took up volleyball after seeing the Karasuno High School player known as the Little Giant win on television, and now he enrolls there hoping to join the team despite his height. He runs straight into Tobio Kageyama, the gifted setter called the King of the Court, who beat him badly in middle school. Their open hostility leads the club to shut both out until they learn to cooperate. Wanting to play, they come back with a plan to prove they can function as teammates, and as the pair settle into an unusual setter and spiker partnership, an old rival school invites Karasuno to practice matches. Comedy, drama and sports all share the court.
