Hanamichi Sakuragi arrives at Shohoku High as a freshman with two things working against him: a towering frame and hair the color of a warning light. She asks a simple question: do you like basketball? Hanamichi, already smitten, lies and says yes. What starts as a desperate attempt to impress a girl becomes something entirely different when Haruko introduces him to the sport itself. At the gymnasium she asks whether he can dunk, and his wild leap overshoots so badly that his head smacks into the blackboard. He also hears about Rukawa, a fellow freshman counted among the country's top prospects.
