This is a recap movie that knows exactly what made the first season work: the moment Nishinoya's feet leave the ground, the third-years crying in the gym after their last match, the specific kind of joy that comes from watching a team click. It doesn't pad the runtime with filler or pretend to be something it isn't. If you've already seen the TV version, you don't need this.

Karasuno High's volleyball team finally reaches the Inter-High, where it faces Date Tech High School, the team that beat them badly the previous year. That defeat stirs up old fear among the second- and third-years, who could not find a way past Date Tech's read block. Now freshmen Shouyou Hinata and Tobio Kageyama give them new hope of breaking through. Waiting in the following round is the powerhouse Aoba Jousai, captained by the crafty setter Tooru Oikawa, who went to the same middle school as Kageyama and holds a grudge against him. The second film retelling the first TV season of Haikyuu!!, this sports comedy-drama sets up a clash of gifted setters with a place in the tournament at stake, and adds some new material not seen in the TV anime.
