Suzu is a fake memory walking around in a dead boy's body, and Hotori is losing hers one day at a time, so they meet and decide to figure out who they actually are. The film doesn't waste time on the philosophical setup; it moves straight into the quiet devastation of two kids trying to stay real to each other while their anchors slip away. At a facility where robots receive implanted memories of real people, Suzu is built as a replacement for a young boy his family has lost. His artificial memories come from the dead boy's personality unit, and they arrive a little at a time. By chance, Suzu meets Hotori, a girl whose memories are disappearing piece by piece because of a fatal illness. While Suzu gains an identity borrowed from someone else's life, Hotori loses her own with each passing day. The two form a friendship across these opposite paths: one gaining a past he never lived, the other watching hers fade. Together they try to work out who they are as their memories change around them. The film is a science fiction drama centered on memory and identity.
