A high school boy who sees romance flags hovering over every girl around him, except he's terrified of actually catching feelings because of trauma, and then four of them move into his dorm anyway. The show knows its premise is absurd and leans into it, treating the flag mechanic like a real system that breaks down the moment actual emotions show up. By the final episode it explains what the flags actually are, which means every joke about love at first sight suddenly means something different. This is harem anime that refuses to pretend its own setup doesn't matter.

Sota Hatate can see flags floating above people's heads, markers of turning points in their lives. A death flag signals that someone is about to die. A romance flag points toward love. He can also knock these flags down to stop events from happening, and he has used that power to save lives. Yet after surviving a ship sinking as the only survivor, he believes misfortune falls on anyone close to him, so he refuses to make friends or form relationships.
