A mother's day doesn't resolve itself by episode's end. The show doesn't build toward anything, it just watches a woman keep her kids alive, keep herself sane, and find something close to joy in the exhaustion. Most slice-of-life anime treat domesticity like a backdrop for character arcs. This one treats it like the actual thing that matters. You watch because the small, repetitive, unsolvable problems of raising children are the only problems that ever truly matter to anyone living them. There's no plot twist coming. Just a woman who occasionally succeeds at making dinner, and that's enough.

Adapted from Rieko Saibara's semi-autobiographical manga, Kaasan - Mom's Life is a comedic slice of life TV series built on her own days as a mother bringing up two children. The source strip ran in the weekly morning edition of the Mainichi Newspaper beginning in 2002 and earned a Japan Media Arts Festival Award in 2004, followed by the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2005. The anime began in 2009 and runs for 142 episodes.
