Kino is drowning in someone else's life before the journey even starts. Kino stands at a crossroads between who they were and who they are learning to become. Under the care of their teacher, an older woman living in the forest who is expert with guns, they learn to ride the talking motorcycle Hermes, handle firearms with real skill, and pick up the other abilities a traveler needs to survive. Yet this training carries an invisible weight: the memory of the man whose name they took after he died helping them escape, and the guilt that comes with it. Kino is later pointed toward the original Kino's mother, while growing ever more unsure of their own identity. This prequel film, drawn from the seventh light novel, is a quiet adventure and drama about one traveler trying to live their own life instead of repeating someone else's.
