The Abyss doesn't owe you hope. It starts like a storybook adventure, two kids descending into mystery, gorgeous hand-drawn backgrounds, music that feels like a heartbeat, then systematically dismantles every assumption you made about where this was going. By the time you understand what the descent actually costs, you've already fallen too far to turn back. The show's willingness to let characters suffer real, permanent consequences for curiosity separates it from every other adventure anime trying to look pretty. Warning: the content crosses lines that will legitimately alienate viewers, and pacing dips hard in the middle, but nothing else builds a world this vivid or makes you feel this complicit in a child's ruin.

Riko, an orphan living in the town of Orth on the rim of the Abyss, dreams of exploring that vast, unmapped chasm. Its depths hold strange creatures and ancient relics that no one today can reproduce. Her mother, Lyza, was a White Whistle, one of the legendary divers, and has gone missing. Riko hopes to follow her. As a beginner Red Whistle, Riko may only roam the uppermost layer, but there she finds a robot that looks like a human boy. She names him Reg, and he remembers nothing of his past. Believing his origins lie far below, the two set out to reach the bottom, unaware of how harsh the Abyss truly is. Adventure, mystery and horror blend in this 13-episode fantasy series.
