The dream dies in episode one, and the show doesn't pretend to mourn it. Kiyo trades the spotlight for a kitchen in a maiko house, cooking for girls chasing what she couldn't have, and discovers that feeding people is its own kind of artistry. Every meal she makes is a small refusal to let disappointment define her future.

Two childhood friends from Aomori Prefecture arrive in Kyoto with the same dream: to become maiko, the apprentice geisha of the city's geiko and maiko district. When Kiyo is judged unsuited to the role, she ends up employed as the live-in cook for a maiko house instead. Sumire fits the part perfectly and presses on with her training, tipped as a once-in-a-century maiko. Though disappointed by her own setback, the ever-cheerful Kiyo cooks home-style meals every day for Sumire and the other maiko sharing the house, glad to keep them fed and encouraged as they work toward their goals. The result is a gentle slice-of-life cooking story adapted from a manga by Aiko Koyama.
