Jacob, an eleven-year-old boy, is searching for kokdu dolls to keep alive his memories of the final moments he shared with his grandmother, and by accident he wanders into the world where these dolls live. Kokdu are wooden figures that decorated the biers of Joseon Dynasty funerals, believed to keep the dead company and guard them so they would not be lonely on the road to the afterlife. They take many shapes, among them warriors, servants, clowns and guides, and reflect a view of death as a warm parting and the start of a new journey rather than something to dread.
