R is a robot with more personality than most characters get in a full series. Watch him barrel through Japan with a camera club trying to save their club before sunset, and you'll understand why this OVA has been invisible for thirty years. The animation feels genuinely warm instead of cheap, and the whole thing moves like it knows exactly what it's doing in forty minutes.

R and the rest of the Camera Club at Harukaze High School are heading out on their yearly photography trip. Tosaka, a former club member, has booked them a Stamp Rally tour through a travel agency, where travelers visit landmarks around Japan and stamp a notebook at each one as proof. The agency belongs to the family of Saionji Marii, who can't stand the Camera Club, and the club will be shut down unless every stamp is collected by 6:00 PM. The single OVA mixes comedy with science fiction, adapts a manga that ran in Shounen Sunday, and skips any introduction of its characters or background.
