The world lies in ruins after the shadowy creatures called the Earless tore it apart, and the very idea of music has disappeared. Humanity's heroes are the Players, who pilot mecha known as Equipment against these inhuman foes and win fame and fortune along the way. Fame and wealth flow to the Players while much of the world is covered in destitute scrap heaps. Echo lives among those scrap heaps, a young tech enthusiast who dreams of joining the Players and has even built a makeshift mecha of his own, though he has long since given up hope. That changes when he finds μ, or Mu, a girl with no memory and a mechanical port in her back, the telltale sign of a Player. The two quickly become friends and vow to use their skills to fight for the world, defeat the Earless and bring music back.
