Natsume always knows how to make you sit still and listen. These two stories move at the speed of genuine connection, a small youkai trusting Natsume with an impossible task, a lonely boy finding companionship in something supernatural, and the show doesn't rush either one. The animation breathes. The quiet moments matter as much as the plot ones. This is the series at its most essential: proof that sometimes the smallest exchanges between people and youkai contain everything that needs to happen.

This supernatural drama film pairs two separate stories. In the first, Takashi Natsume is out looking for Nyanko-sensei when he meets Mitsumi, a small and timid youkai. Mitsumi has been chosen by his leader Gantetsu, a powerful divine youkai, to serve as the year's Ishi Okoshi and rouse him from a deep slumber. Moved by how badly Mitsumi wants to prove himself a worthy servant, Natsume offers to help, but others also want to wake the divine being, and time is short. In the second story, a strange man starts calling on Natsume's friend Kaname Tanuma, chatting with him briefly almost every day before leaving. Natsume learns the visitor is a youkai in human form who claims to mean no harm. Tanuma enjoys their talks and trusts him, yet his health slowly worsens, and Natsume grows more suspicious of the visitor and his connection to Tanuma.
