Ashiya shows up at the Mononokean expecting to get a youkai removed, instead he gets adopted by the most aggressively unimpressed man in Tokyo who treats supernatural problems like they're just another Tuesday at the office. The comedy works because nobody in this show is trying, least of all the morose owner who delivers every line like he's doing you a personal favor by existing. Each youkai that wanders in is a small tragedy wearing a silly face, and the show cares enough to fix it without making you feel manipulated.

Ashiya Hanae spends his whole first week of high school stuck in the infirmary, weakened by a fuzzy youkai that has attached itself to him and keeps growing. Desperate, he calls the number on a flyer for an exorcist and finds himself at the Mononokean, a tea room that suddenly appears beside the infirmary. Its gloomy young owner, Haruitsuki Abeno, grudgingly rids him of the creature and then demands payment. Unable to pay, Ashiya must work at the Mononokean to clear his debt, only to learn that his new boss is also his classmate. Together the two set out to send a range of dangerous, strange and curious youkai back to the underworld where they belong, in a supernatural TV series.
