The world Hanako-kun builds looks like nothing else on TV, every frame designed as if the show itself is a supernatural object you're not supposed to be seeing. Nene walks in expecting a wish-granting ghost girl and finds a genderflipped boy in a school bathroom, which sounds ridiculous until the show turns that absurdity into genuine tenderness and real darkness by episode three. The comedy never stops, but it becomes the thing masking something far stranger underneath, and the animation follows that instinct, treating every joke and every broken moment with equal visual weight.

Kamome Academy has its own take on the Seven Mysteries, and one rumor says that Hanako-san, who haunts the third stall of the third floor girls' bathroom in the old school building, will grant any wish to whoever manages to summon her. Plenty have tried and failed. Nene Yashiro, an occult fan hoping for luck in love, makes the attempt and learns that this Hanako is a boy. After a string of mishaps connected to her romantic wishes, she is pulled into the supernatural against her will and ends up as his assistant. She soon discovers a less famous side of his role: keeping the delicate balance between humans and spirits. The show mixes comedy, mystery, action and drama in a supernatural school setting.
