Natsume doesn't need spectacle to break you. Each episode peels back one more layer of why he closes himself off, then shows you someone choosing to stay open anyway, even when it costs him. By season four, you're not watching a boy return names to yokai, you're watching him learn that being known is worth the risk of being hurt.

Natsume continues his quiet life as the keeper of his grandmother's Book of Friends, a ledger holding the names of yokai bound to it, and he spends his days handing those names back. After a brief separation from his bodyguard Nyanko-sensei, a band of masked, monkey-like yokai seize him and carry him off to their forest in search of the book. Nyanko-sensei gathers Natsume's yokai friends for a rescue, but the forest hides dangers of its own, among them the Matoba Clan. As events reach from the Matoba stronghold to the house where he grew up, Natsume has to face his own past and think about his future. The season mixes supernatural drama with gentle slice-of-life moments and the warmth of his friendships.
