Natsume stops running from his loneliness and just sits with it, the way a real person would. These episodes don't need monsters or mysteries, they need only Natsume learning that being known by someone, even briefly, changes what it means to be alone. The show has always understood that the supernatural is just a language for human connection, and these specials are its quietest, most perfect argument for that truth.

Two unaired episodes of Natsume Yuujinchou Roku, released with its fourth and fifth DVD volumes. In the first, Takashi Natsume and his cat companion Madara head out on a sweltering summer day to buy jelly when a passing truck runs over an old masked man, who pleads with Natsume for help. The stranger is a youkai, the spirit of a Suzunaru tree that lightning struck and that was then felled, and as the tree fades he asks Natsume to carry water to him every day until his end. In the second, a schoolgirl named Tamami walks through a forest counting her steps according to written directions, dozes off during a rest, and wakes to find a talking cat. Through the cat and Natsume she learns the forest holds a world apart from the ordinary one, where unseen things become visible. She then shares the story of a white owl she once helped, which keeps returning in her dreams to guide her back into the strange woods.
