Japanese history gets a cat makeover, and somehow this is exactly what comedy needed. Each episode breezes through a real historical figure or event, but filtered through the deadpan energy of anthropomorphic cats who have no idea how serious any of this actually is. The pacing is so tight and the gags so quick that you stop thinking about the premise being absurd and just let the rhythm carry you. This is the comfort food version of a history lesson, made for people who want their education to land sideways through humor instead of straight on.

Neko Neko Nihonshi 5th Season is a 2020 comedy short.
