Nobody talks about this one. Nintama Rantarou is pure unfiltered comedy about ninja kids failing spectacularly at ninja training, and the movie doubles down on the chaos, no plot pretense, just the entire school mobilizing for a mission and everything going hilariously sideways. The humor lives in character stupidity and physical timing, not punchlines that age badly. If you've ever wanted an anime that knows exactly what it is and commits fully to the bit, this is it.
Summer break ends at the Ninjutsu Academy, and the students learn that one of Komatsuda's mistakes has jumbled all of their summer homework. Kisanta ends up with an assignment meant for a sixth-year student, and he disappears while attempting to slip into Oomagatoki Castle and steal the lord's fundoshi. A group that includes Shinbei and Kirimaru is sent to bring him back, but Oomagatoki is at war with Tasogaredoki Castle, so the rescue may not be easy. At the same time, the academy receives a plea for support from a village suffering because of the war, and Rantarou heads there with the remaining students and teachers to help. Two missions play out around the same conflict, told with a comedic touch.
