Jane spends her entire life chasing a dream her dead mother planted, watching the men around her die or vanish for it, and then has to decide if the dream was ever hers at all. The show understands that adventure stories are really about whether you can love something without letting it consume you. By the end, you're not sure if she saved the world or just repeated her father's mistake in a different shape.
Jane's mother dies at her birth, and her wealthy English father later remarries a woman whose son, William, resents his new family. Jane and her brother George grow up sharing a dream of building a flying machine. George is convinced that a strange sky-blue sand hidden in the far-off deserts of Asia can lift machines into the air, and he sets out on an expedition to find it. News soon arrives that he has been executed for treason, and William goes missing as well. When Jane gets an unsigned letter holding a little of that pale blue sand, drifting in the air, she is certain George still lives. She heads east to find him and prove he is innocent, and along the way she meets new friends and runs into many puzzles, some of which perhaps should never be solved.
