This is the half where the flinching stops, and that should scare you more than the sword fights. Belief spent its runtime watching a fifteen-year-old too small and too soft to belong anywhere near the Shinsengumi beg his way in; Friend is the part where Tetsunosuke gets what he asked for and has to live inside it. The Peace Maker Kurogane engine has always been the mirror: Tetsunosuke on one side, Suzu on the other, two orphaned boys handed blades by grown men with causes, and neither of them old enough to understand what revenge costs. Around them the adults are already dying, Okita smiling through the blood in his lungs, Hijikata earning the demon nickname the history books gave him. Tatsunosuke keeps trying to pull his brother back toward the ledgers and the ink, and you keep watching him fail. Bakumatsu tragedy hits hardest when the kid's hands are still shaking.
