Yu Narukami arrives in the quiet rural town of Yasoinaba in spring to stay with his uncle for family reasons, transferring into the local Yasogami High School. His year there is marked by a string of murders in town and by the Midnight Channel, a strange program that airs late at night. Set between the events of that year, the story centers on a mysterious girl Yu glimpsed at the train station when he first arrived. Igor and Margaret of the Velvet Room later introduce her as Marie, a moody trainee, and ask Yu to look after her as part of her training. Marie resents the arrangement and remembers nothing from before her arrival in the Velvet Room, including meeting him. The two try to understand each other as the year unfolds amid the murders and another world.
