A group of girls, among them Yui Tsukishima, are pulled back to the final years of the Edo period by the power of mysterious stones called Hojou. There they become the new Tennyo, celestial maidens who replace the previous ones lost in battle, and each girl receives her own special power. Yui's power is words, which she uses to fight evil by giving people hope. Together the girls oppose two demon brothers bent on wiping out humanity. Alongside the battles, a rakugo storyteller named Utamaru Katsura wants to turn the cheerful Yui into a skilled professional of the comic storytelling art, which gives the series its comedy built around stories that end in a punchline.
