This is the version of Rick and Morty that stops elbowing you in the ribs every eight seconds and just lets the dread sit there. Takashi Sano earned this after Rick and Morty vs. Genocider and Summer Meets God, and at Telecom Animation Film he gets ten episodes to build one continuous, moody arc instead of a joke-per-frame sprint. The Smiths redrawn in anime linework hits weird at first, then the fluid action and quiet, empty-house framing make you realize that was always the point. The comedy is still there, it's just colder, more willing to let Rick's dream-tinkering and cloning habits read as symptoms rather than punchlines. Summer actually gets to be a character with her own agenda, which the parent show spent seasons refusing to do. It premiered at an animation festival in Poznan before it hit Adult Swim, which tells you exactly whose project this was.
