This is a smartphone game adaptation that somehow works. Five girls walk into class, walk out into a supernatural war they're trained to fight alone, and the show treats both halves like they matter equally, the mundane school politics carry the same weight as the otherworldly invasion. It never condescends to explain what it is or apologize for the tonal whiplash; it just builds a team you actually care about and throws them into a fight nobody else can see coming. The real cost is that thirteen episodes barely scratches what the show is building, and it leaves you wanting the story it clearly had planned.
Goryōkan Academy is a newly founded, highly popular private school for girls, set in the near future, but it hides a side that outsiders never see. The school seeks out and trains girls for the Fifth Force, a special unit formed to fight the Oburi, invisible supernatural beings that emerged from a rift in space and time and are consuming the world. Only girls called Strikers, who can sense the fifth dimension, are able to battle them. A newly appointed leader must gather five students into a fresh team, Altair Torte. Adapted from a Square Enix mobile game, the sci-fi action story centers on their battles and the friendships they form.
