A boy with nothing but a drunk father and a goddess who won't stay finds out that love doesn't measure itself by how long you keep it. In late summer 1996, ten-year-old Minato lives an unstable life in a coastal town in Kumamoto with his father, a heavy drinker. His one comfort is Ben-chan, a goddess who takes the shape of a girl and appeared on Benten Island. Only in the hours he shares with her does Minato feel truly himself. When he faces being sent to a children's home and parted from her, he prays to a Shiranuhi, a strange light drifting over the sea, asking it to grant a single wish. That wish, fueled by hatred for his father, eventually turns into a curse. The result is a supernatural film set in a seaside town at the close of summer.
