Reki and Langa don't need S to be themselves; they just need rain, a card game, and stupidity. SK8 is at its best when it stops performing and just lets you watch these idiots be idiots together. The show knows downtime hits harder than any race when the people matter more than the stakes.

Four slice-of-life omnibus stories show the SK8 cast away from their usual skating. One Sunday, a sudden squall catches Reki, Langa, and Miya on their way to the skatepark, so they retreat to Reki's place and start playing Karuta, a Japanese card game they come across there. Another story returns to the high school days of Sakurayashiki and Nanjo, two unremarkable students who kept butting heads and competing with each other. A third looks at the everyday life of Ainosuke and Kikuchi and the private moments they share. In the last, Shadow, an anti-hero by night, works hard at a flower shop by day in a short three-part piece that shows his kind and noble side. The OVA mixes comedy and drama with lighter everyday moments, and it had a limited theatrical run in Japan before its home video release.
