Traveling merchant Kraft Lawrence is hauling a cartload of fur pelts when he stops at the village of Pasloe, where old folklore tells of a wolf deity named Holo who promised the villagers rich wheat harvests centuries ago. After he leaves, he finds an animal-eared girl asleep among his pelts who says she is that very wolf. Holo wants to go back to her home in the north, and after a rocky first meeting she persuades Lawrence to take her along. In exchange, she promises to pay her way by lending her sharp mind and long experience to his business. Once lonely, the merchant and the wisewolf head north together, seizing whatever economic chances turn up and landing in situations that test both their trading skills and their bond.
