It's 1890 in America, and the Steel Ball Run is about to begin: the first horse race across the North American continent, a punishing trek of roughly 4,000 miles through untamed wasteland, with fifty million dollars going to the winner. Johnny Joestar, once hailed as a genius jockey, is now paralyzed and sunk in despair. He comes to San Diego only to watch the start. There he meets Gyro Zeppeli, an outlaw who carries two steel balls at his waist instead of a gun and means to win. During a duel Johnny sees one of those balls unleash a strange power, and when he touches it he stands on his own legs for the first time in two years. Determined to uncover the secret of the steel balls, Johnny enters the race alongside Gyro.
