Alicization stops trying to prove something and just lets its characters break. Kirito returns as a shell of himself, and the show spends real time with Alice learning what it means to care for someone who can't fight back anymore. The final arc finds its actual stakes not in who wins the war, but in whether these three people can stay human after everything has already taken that from them.

Six months have passed since the fall of the pontifex Administrator. Kirito has lost his arm, his soul and a dear friend, and his damaged fluctlight has left him comatose. Alice has brought him back to their hometown of Rulid Village, where she looks after him and lives a quiet life, her will to fight as an Integrity Knight gone. The calm ends when the Dark God Vecta rises in the depths of the Dark Territory and leads an army of dark forces into the human empire, seeking the Priestess of Light. The Integrity Knight Bercouli readies the human forces for a war of enormous scale, and Alice must take up her sword once more to defend the world Kirito and Eugeo fought to protect.
