Jinta serves as guardian to Itsukihime, a shrine maiden in the remote mountain village of Kadono during Japan's Edo period. His life of duty shatters when he goes into the forest to slay a demon and finds a creature that speaks of the distant future. After their fight, the demon joins its severed arm to Jinta, leaving him a demon man who no longer ages. He returns to find Kadono burning and Suzune, who fled home with him as a child, turned into a demon, and he sets out to find her. Across the centuries from Edo to the Heisei era, Jinta shields people from hostile demons. Yet with each battle, a deeper question gnaws at him: what does it mean to carry a sword? In quieter moments he wonders what he will do when he faces Suzune again.
