The movie earns its tears not through melodrama but through the simple act of watching two people who have spent years circling each other finally move forward together. A kitten becomes the excuse, but the real story is Nishikata's quiet realization that he no longer needs to pretend her teasing doesn't matter because it never did. The summer feels infinite and already ending at once, which is exactly what the last real moment of childhood tastes like.

Nishikata and Takagi are about to start their last summer of junior high when they come across a kitten that has been left behind. They agree to look after the little animal together, calling it Hana, while they search for its lost mother. That shared task marks the real start of a gentle story of young romance. Takagi's playful teasing and the light comic moments longtime viewers expect are still here, set against an easygoing slice of life backdrop.
