The romance doesn't wait for the plot to set itself up, it's there from episode one, and the show knows the real tension isn't whether they'll fall for each other, but what happens when a demon and an angel actually do. The first three episodes are rough comedy sludge that almost kills it before the chemistry kicks in hard enough to matter. Once it does, the back half becomes exactly what Kaguya-sama fans actually want: two people who can't admit they're falling, except their circumstances make every argument proof they already have. The action scenes hit different when they're love language between characters who are supposed to be enemies.

Lily isn't human. She's an angel, one of the very enemies he is supposed to be fighting, and she is determined to reform his demonic ways. Trying to recruit her could become the worst mistake of a war Hell is already losing, and worse still, Akutsu may end up falling in love with his own worst enemy. The result is a supernatural romantic comedy built on heaven and hell at odds.
