Guy Shishio spent two years as a cyborg half-corpse before GaoGaiGar gave him a reason to stand up. Every episode asks the same question with absolute sincerity: what does it cost to protect people who don't know you're dying to save them? The robot fights are secondary to the weight of watching a man rebuilt into a weapon choose humanity anyway, choosing it again every single episode, until the choice itself becomes the only real armor he has.

In 2005, alien monsters called Zonders rise from underground and begin attacking Tokyo. Standing against them is the secret agency known as the Gutsy Geoid Guard, or 3G, and its giant robot GaoGaiGar. Its pilot, Guy Shishio, is a former astronaut who nearly died two years earlier when the Zonders first crashed to Earth, until a mysterious robot lion named Galeon pulled him from his burning shuttle. His father, Leo, used Galeon's technology to rebuild him as a cyborg, hoping he could stop the aliens. Now GaoGaiGar, with Galeon at its core, fights to protect Earth alongside a team of transforming robots and a young boy named Mamoru, who can purify Zonder cores and seems linked to Galeon. The result is a sci-fi mecha adventure built around giant robot battles.
