An attack breaks the fragile peace between the spirit world and humanity. Luo Xiaohei has been training his powers under Wuxian, one of the rare humans strong enough in spirit to serve the Guild as an executor. Their quiet days end when the Guild elders summon Wuxian and name him the main suspect in a massacre of spirits at a remote branch. With his master held in custody, Hei joins Luye, an earlier disciple of Wuxian, in her own investigation.
