Shuurei walks into the palace to fix a broken emperor and discovers she's actually solving the empire itself, one political knot at a time. The show never bothers with the reverse-harem window dressing, it's a story about a woman clawing her way into a government that wasn't built for her, using her mind instead of her bloodline. Shuurei belongs to the respected Kou family, yet her household is poor, and she takes on odd jobs to get by while her father earns little as a palace archivist. She dreams of serving as a government official, a post closed to women. When the new Emperor, Shi Ryuuki, gains a name for neglecting his duties and preferring men, Shuurei is offered generous pay to become his consort for six months, with the real task of making him a responsible ruler, and she readily agrees. Seiran, a young man her father adopted and her close friend, comes along as Ryuuki's bodyguard. Life at court brings political trouble, but it also revives Shuurei's hope of becoming an official, and with the companions she meets she keeps pressing forward while dodging the Emperor's advances. Feelings between the characters grow in ways no one expected, in a fantasy blending adventure, comedy, drama and romance.
