It puts you back on the couch at seven years old, and it does it without a single wink at the adults in the room. This is the fully animated Oz, which means the cyclone, the yellow brick road, and the Witch of the West's wolf and crow henchmen all move with a fluidity live action never got near, and the villain beats land as genuine menace instead of costume. Aileen Quinn voices Dorothy with that same bright, unguarded belt she brought to Annie, and it makes the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodsman, and the Cowardly Lion feel like friends she actually collected rather than plot furniture. It is a comfort watch in the purest sense: nothing here is trying to subvert you, so the second viewing is warmer than the first. Put it on when the week has been long and let Toto do the rest.
