Urusei Yatsura OVA exists in that perfect window where the series had already won you over, so now it just gets to be completely unhinged. These aren't episodes fighting to prove the show's worth; they're a victory lap where a sherbet-producing bird can carry an entire story and nobody has to explain why. The comedy doesn't need setup anymore, it just detonates, and you're laughing before you understand what you're laughing at.

Lum, Ataru, Ten and the rest of the Tomobiki crowd return in a batch of new standalone stories that stay every bit as strange as before. In one, Lum, Ataru and Shinobu meet a young man dressed as a rabbit, step into the Room of Destiny and catch a glimpse of what lies ahead for them. In another, Ran tries to cash in on a hot Tokyo summer by opening a sherbet shop, relying on a bird that produces sherbet cones, and the plan goes badly wrong. Elsewhere, Ataru suffers through yet another unfortunate encounter with Lum's cooking. The eleven episodes blend comedy, adventure and science fiction into loose, self-contained escapades.
