A girl loses her father just as she's learning to want her mother back. The show doesn't turn that into melodrama, it turns it into the texture of actual survival, the small decisions that add up to a life. Charlotte lives happily on a ranch in Quebec, Canada, raised by her father, a former French nobleman, and surrounded by friendly animals. On her twelfth birthday she learns that her mother, whom she always believed dead, is alive in Paris and will soon join them. Charlotte is upset at first, but just as she comes to terms with the news, her father dies. Her mother then arrives to live with her, a woman Charlotte does not know at all. Charlotte also discovers that her father came from a noble family, and her grandfather wants to force her back into it, while a landowner schemes to take her father's farm. Around the same time she meets a strange boy. Through a long run of hardships, Charlotte's trusting, optimistic nature carries her forward in this 30-episode drama of everyday life.
