Adol Christin, a young adventurer from the mainland driven by wanderlust, sets out for the island of Esteria and washes ashore after a shipwreck. He finds the land under siege by mythical beasts controlled by the evil priest Dark Fact. A prophecy then speaks of a brave hero from another land who will bring salvation, and that hero is Adol. Guided by the fortuneteller Sarah Tovah, he and his allies travel across Esteria in search of the legendary Books of Ys, on a long and dangerous journey to restore peace.
