Anubis feels like a real threat because the movie stops pretending Yugi alone can save the day. Kaiba has to matter. The duel sequences live in the art style you remember, the monsters move like they weigh something, the sound design makes every card play feel consequential. This is a movie that knows exactly what it is for: the kid who watched the TV series and needed to see these characters survive something that actually scared them.

Yugi is a boy hooked on Duel Monsters, a card game sweeping the nation that hides ancient mystical energies able to change history. Far beneath the Egyptian desert, an old evil awakens: Anubis, who was beaten centuries ago by Yugi's alter ego, the Pharaoh. Back for revenge and wielding the Eighth Millennium Item, Anubis intends to wipe out Yugi and seize control of the world. Yugi and his friends must face their strongest enemy yet, with the whole planet at stake, in this fantasy adventure film.
