A shy kid with one good card learns that standing out doesn't mean being reckless, just brave enough to show up. Vanguard strips away the world-ending stakes that strangle most card game anime and builds something quieter: a show about becoming the person you were too scared to be. Every fight matters because every opponent has their own reason for playing, their own card they're holding onto like a lifeline.

Aichi Sendou is a timid third-year middle schooler who tries hard not to stand out and is often picked on by his peers. His one source of strength is Blaster Blade, a rare card he was given as a small child. That card belongs to Vanguard, a card game set on the planet Cray whose novel system has made it a worldwide craze. When the school bully snatches Blaster Blade, it ends up with Toshiki Kai, the cold and highly skilled cardfighter who first introduced Aichi to the game. Kai will only give it back if Aichi beats him in a cardfight. Drawn into Vanguard, Aichi makes friends such as Misaki and Kamui, finds rivals, and starts to enjoy a fuller life. He practices every day, hoping to face Kai again and earn his recognition.
