It's lighthearted enough that you don't need heavy lore to enjoy it, but the power system has enough depth that each fight actually matters. Around 2030, Earth is connected to a parallel world of monsters and magic through a collectible card game called Future Card Buddyfight. Buddy Rare Cards serve as gateways, letting ordinary people partner with a monster and battle other players. Some use their Buddy's power to break the law, so the Buddy Police track them down and seize their Decks. Gaou Mikado, an eager young martial artist, teams up with the fiery Drumbunker Dragon and receives a Core Deck Case from Tasuku Ryuuenji, a gifted fighter with the Buddy Police. As Gaou takes up Buddyfighting, the matches begin to feel a little too real.
