Yuya Sakaki lives in a world where dueling has become a physical spectacle. Improved Solid Vision technology gives Duel Monsters real mass, so players in Action Duels can move through the terrain alongside their monsters and grab Action Cards to escape tight spots. Yuya is a middle schooler at the You Show Duel School in Miami City, founded by his father Yusho, who promoted Entertainment Dueling as a way to make people smile. Three years ago Yusho disappeared and missed his scheduled duel with the champion Strong Ishijima. Yuya still dreams of becoming an Entertainment Duelist like him. During his own match against Ishijima, his pendant starts to glow and lets him perform Pendulum Summoning, a method nobody knew about, and he becomes famous overnight. Reiji Akaba, head of Leo Corporation, soon begins producing Pendulum Cards, and the mysteries around the new summoning method and Yuya's missing father begin to surface.
