A lonely, game-loving high school student named Yugi Mutou finally completes the Millennium Puzzle, an ancient Egyptian relic, and awakens the spirit of a nameless pharaoh sealed within it. The pharaoh has lost all memory of who he once was. Together with Yugi and his friends, the spirit sets out to recover his past while facing enemies connected to his history. Their battles are fought through Duel Monsters, a card game in which duelists pit monsters against each other and use magic and trap cards to disrupt their rivals. Many adversaries covet the puzzle and its power, and some wield Millennium Items that can raise the stakes of a match to deadly levels.
