This one is thirty minutes long and it does not waste a second of them. It's the Toei Anime Fair short, built to be a snack: Koenma gets snatched, King Enma's seal goes missing, and the whole Spirit Detective crew mobilizes before you've settled into your seat. Yusuke leads with the same brawler's swagger he brought back from the dead, Kuwabara talks more trash than he can cash, and Kurama and Hiei show up doing exactly what they do, which is make everyone else look slow. Garuga's shapeshifting gimmick turns the fight into a paranoia test, and the Spirit Gun payoff lands because the movie never pretends to be more than a very good excuse to watch these four go to work. Not canon, not required, still the purest hit of 1993 Yusuke you can get in half an hour.

Yusuke Urameshi is no angel, but after dying while saving a child, he ends up in the Spirit World, where it turns out his death was a clerical error. To return to life he passes a series of tests and becomes a spirit detective, working as a half-dead, half-alive agent for Koenma, son of the Spirit World's ruler. His summer vacation is cut short when Koenma is kidnapped, and the ransom demand is King Enma's Golden Seal. If anyone other than King Enma holds the seal, the Spirit World will fall into chaos. Joined by his closest allies, Yusuke heads for Magma Valley to rescue the one who gave him a second chance and to uncover who is behind the plot. The film mixes action, adventure and comedy in a supernatural rescue story.
