A high school kid gets dragged into a card game where his partner is an AI that might be more human than he is. The tournament backdrop is just window dressing. What actually happens is two people learning to trust each other while the rules of what they're competing in shift underneath them. Zenonzard knows its premise sounds thin, so it doesn't waste time justifying it. Instead it builds a relationship that feels earned across nine episodes, and by the end you realize the cards were never the point.

In the year 20XX, competitive card gaming has become a global craze. Humans known as Concodes pair up with highly advanced AI called Codemen to play the card battle game ZENONZARD, and the world championships, THE ZENON, have fans in a frenzy. Souta Azuma is an ordinary high school student until a mysterious woman, Eilietta Lash, challenges him to a battle. She reveals that she is a Codeman and wants Souta as her partner for THE ZENON. He reluctantly agrees. Their first opponent turns out to be Shion Saionji, a hugely famous player who attends Souta's school, along with her buddy, Ash Claude.
