A man separated from his wife discovers the bandits holding him aren't villains to escape, they're people to understand. The show refuses the obvious move, spinning capture into genuine friendship between people who should be enemies. By the time you realize this is a romance about a marriage tested by war, you've already fallen for everyone involved, and the real tension isn't whether Ning Yi and Su Tan'er reunite, it's whether they'll have to choose between each other and the family they've found on opposite sides.

In the eighth year of Jinghan, war rages among the kingdoms north of the Wu Dynasty while the south enjoys a fragile calm. Ning Yi and Su Tan'er travel to Lin'an City on business when a sudden catastrophe strikes. The Thirteenth Army, a band of outlaws, uses the upheaval to take the city, and the couple are torn apart. Taken prisoner, Ning Yi comes to know the army's leaders one by one, including Liu Xigua and Chen Fan, and the two sides become rivals and friends at once, with real respect between them. Amid conflicts of family and nation, great Confucian scholars stand by their principles, heroes emerge, and the world begins to shift. The second season of Zhui Xu blends comedy, romance and slice-of-life moments.
