A girl suffocates under her broken family so completely that she'd rather be a cat than herself. That's the real story here, not the romance. The movie knows that loving someone and hating where you come from can feel like the same desperate thing, and it doesn't flinch from how ugly that desperation looks before it breaks open into something real.

Miyo Sasaki is a lively junior high student from a broken home, with an unconfident father and a stepmother whose efforts to connect with her come off as a nuisance. She sees her classmate Kento Hinode as an escape from her troubles and pursues him every day with odd displays of affection, but he pays her no attention. Then Miyo finds a magic mask that turns her into a white cat, which Kento names Tarou, and in that form she finally grows close to him. Overhearing his problems as a cat, she realizes she cannot help him this way. She must choose between staying Tarou or revealing who she is, while the magic threatens to keep her from ever becoming human again.
