It drops you into a hole in the ground and makes you dig. Aki Tesno lives at the bottom of a valley where scrap is currency, and the second a man from the uptown city shows up asking him to pull a kidnapped girl out of trouble, you already know which way the class math runs. The Bottoms and Tops split does more work than the dialogue does: you feel the vertical hierarchy every time the camera goes underground, crawling tunnels for salvage that somebody richer will eventually own. This is one episode, so nobody gets an arc, and the cast stays thinner than VOTOMS regulars will want. But if you came for Armored Troopers treated as junk machines dragged out of the dirt rather than heroic units, the premise lands. Watch it as a side story, not a sequel, and it holds up fine.

Aki Tesno makes his home in an impoverished village deep in a valley. He earns his living protecting scrap salvagers and piloting a robotic machine known as an At, or Altro, which differs from the Armored Troopers the franchise is famous for. His routine changes when a man from a city on higher ground comes to him with a request to save a girl who has been abducted, setting up a single-episode mecha action drama in the Votoms universe.
